Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Promises a Gritty, Neon-Drenched Tale of Vengeance

LOS ANGELES — Lucasfilm Animation is poised to deliver its most ambitious and mature project to date with the upcoming 10-episode series, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. Slated for an exclusive two-episode premiere on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, the series fills the massive narrative void between the Siege of Mandalore in The Clone Wars and Maul's eventual cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Created by Dave Filoni, with Brad Rau serving as supervising director and Matt Michnovetz as head writer, Shadow Lord picks up approximately one year after Maul's defeat at the hands of Ahsoka Tano. Stripped of his power and actively hunted by the Galactic Empire under the orders of his former master, Emperor Palpatine, Maul is forced into exile. He finds refuge on Janix—a neon-soaked, crime-ridden planet that remains untouched by the Empire's initial expansion. It is here that Maul begins laying the ruthless groundwork for his galactic crime syndicate, Crimson Dawn.

A New Apprentice and a "Cops-and-Robbers" Underworld

On Janix, Maul crosses paths with Devon Izara (voiced by Gideon Adlon), a disillusioned young Twi'lek Jedi Padawan who managed to survive Order 66. Sensing her fractured faith in the Jedi Order, Maul attempts to mold her into his new apprentice to combat the encroaching Imperial Inquisition. Supervising director Brad Rau has described the series as exploring a "cops-and-robbers" dynamic within the Star Wars universe, delving deep into the seedy underbelly of the galaxy where morality is entirely subjective.

Groundbreaking Animation and Visceral Combat

Artistically, Shadow Lord represents a massive technical leap for Lucasfilm Animation. Co-produced with CGCG, the series steps away from the traditional aesthetics of The Clone Wars. Instead, it utilizes a newly developed "power rig" and glass-painted brushstrokes to create what the industry is calling a "grungier art style"—a seamless blend of stop-motion claymation textures and cinematic live-action framing.

To ensure the combat feels heavy and visceral, animators relied heavily on live-action reference footage performed by Maul's veteran voice actor, Sam Witwer. Fans can expect highly detailed, aggressive choreography as Maul's iconic double-bladed combat style clashes with the mechanical, spinning sabers wielded by the Imperial Inquisitors. The violence is palpable, pushing the boundaries of Star Wars animation to cater to a mature audience.

A Star-Studded Cast and Deep Lore Connections

The series boasts a phenomenal voice cast. Joining Witwer and Adlon are Oscar-nominee Wagner Moura as Janix police detective Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as his droid partner "Two-Boots," and Dennis Haysbert as Jedi Master Eeko-Dio-Daki. In a brilliant stroke of cross-series connectivity that Filoni is famous for, A.J. LoCascio will voice the masked Inquisitor Marrok—revealing the complex, living backstory of the mysterious character who later appeared in the live-action Ahsoka series.

Rapid Release Schedule

Lucasfilm is employing an aggressive, highly calculated release strategy for the show. Dropping two episodes every Monday, the entire serialized epic will conclude in less than a month, perfectly timed to culminate on May 4th, Star Wars Day.

April 6: Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge & Chapter 2: Sinister Schemes

April 13: Chapter 3: Whispers in the Unknown & Chapter 4: Pride and Vengeance
