Lightsaber Power Systems:The Reliance on Lithium-lon
To power 144 LEDs,each drawing up to 60mA at full white brightness, the current demand can exceed 8-10 Amps. This necessitates high-drain 18650 Lithium-lon batteries(typically 3.7V,3000mAh to 3600mAh). Standard AA batteries cannot supply this current without instantaneous voltage sag, which would cause the microcontroller to reset. The integration of protected vs.unprotected cells is a common debate; protected cells(with a PCB to prevent over-discharge)are safer but may trip their fuse under the high current spikes of a Neopixel ignition. There is a common misconception that protected batteries "blow fuses" or cut off power during use. This is false for proper lightsaber batteries.Standard lightsabers draw between 1A to 15A of current. As long as you use a High Drain Protected Battery (10A-15A rated), it will NEVER cut off power during normal use.People who experience power cut-offs are likely using cheap, low-amperage batteries (designed for flashlights, rated at only 3A-5A). Those are not built for the Jedi path.
The Heart of Your Saber: Why Protected 18650 Batteries are Mandatory
Safety is not optional. Don't compromise your lightsaber—or your safety—with unprotected cells.
For all high-end lightsabers (especially Neopixel models), we strictly recommend using 18650 Li-ion batteries with a Protection Circuit Board (PCB).
Why Protected Batteries? The Safety Advantages: A protected battery acts as a "smart gatekeeper," preventing dangerous chemical reactions before they happen.
Prevents Fire & Thermal Runaway: The most critical feature. If the battery overheats or fails, the circuit cuts power immediately, preventing explosions or fire hazards.
Short Circuit Protection: If the positive and negative ends accidentally touch (e.g., inside a metal hilt or in your pocket), the PCB instantly shuts down the battery to prevent a dangerous arc.
Over-Charge Protection: Stops the charging process precisely at 4.2V, preventing the battery from being "force-fed" energy, which causes swelling and leaks.
Over-Discharge Prevention: Stops the saber from draining the battery below 2.5V. Draining a Lithium battery to 0% kills it permanently; the PCB ensures your battery lives to fight another day.
